When you are done, it will say merging 100, and it takes about 3 seconds, but you aren't finished at that point. Make sure that your mail merge toolbar is displayed (view - toolbars - mailmerge). On the toolbar, to the right, is the "merge to email" button (looks like a letter with an envelope over it). This is a separate function from completing the merge. Click that, and it should take care of your problem. Sounds like you were just missing that last step.
